Bye Bye Laundry

We wash our clothes much more than needed and it harms both the clothes and the planet. This project reflects on our attitude towards dirt with aim to make people use less water and to change our washing behavior.  I want to give awareness to this issue with an alternative solution for washing that prevents clothes being thrown in the washing machine rapidly.

‘Bye Bye Laundry’ keeps clothes fresh and clean using activated charcoal. Activated charcoal is carbon that has been treated with oxygen, which results in a highly porous material that absorbs the odour.

The essential design details of the object include an easy way to re-fill the charcoal and a filter that lets charcoal breath through the glass. The materials are considered appropriate to its function. The ring that holds the clothes is flocked to create a luxury and functional surface.

An important factor has been to consider the context of the object to give it a certain amount of affordances. This means it will suit different situations as door handles, wardrobes, chairs, hooks, and windows. The language of the object has been focused on honesty and intuition.
